» About

My career has been spent working to build organizations that have a mission I believe in. My first job out of college was with Illinois PIRG directing their canvass. While many of my peers were behind desks in comfy offices I was often out in the neighborhoods around Chicago training inspired activists to bring an effective campaign message to someone at their doorstep. While I have long since retired my clipboard, that job provided a unique and very useful introduction to crafting compelling messages and engaging people in a dialogue on issues important to them.

More recently, I worked for the Fund for Public Interest Reseach, an organization that develops the membership of some of the most prominent organizations in the country, including the Sierra Club, Human Rights Campaign, Greenpeace and the PIRGs. For eight years I ran their direct mail program, which continued the dialogue with existing members and brought on new members. Though the basic form of direct mail is about as low-tech as you get, communicating through that media is remarkably similar to communicating via the web and email.

It was during my tenure with the Fund that I started to see how much the Internet boom had left the world of public interest organizations behind. While the economy has since changed and many talented professionals in tech-related fields have found religion, the non-profit world has yet to fully realize the potential of the Internet to forward their work.

It's my goal to help organizations reach their online goals by bringing rich experience and a deep understanding of non-profits to the consulting services I provide:

Strategy & Planning. Many web projects fall short before the first line of programming is even written. Like any other organizational project, a sound and comprehensive strategy is the foundation upon which success is built.

Web Development. The sites I build are driven by the mission of your organization. They're also engaging to your audience, look great and make it easy for you to keep the content current and fresh.

Marketing. Your online and offline marketing efforts can and should work in concert to establish your brand and solidify your relationship with your constituency. Any online project should carefully consider the implications for your marketing, even if you're not yet engaged in e-commerce.
